Ready Made Picture Frames VS. Custom Picture Frames: What Are Your Options?
Artists spend a great deal of time creating their artwork of fine art photographs or paintings, but once the piece is finished the artist is not yet done, because the work will need to be framed. There are a wealth of possibilities when it comes to frames. You can select from ready made picture frames or custom picture frames, and there are several advantages that come with either choice.
Ready made picture frames offer the benefit of being available in a wide range of standard sizes, and because of the standardization they are a less expensive option than custom picture frames. You will find ready made picture frames made from metal or wood picture frame moulding. Traditionally, metal frames are used for framing fine art photography. The narrow black metal frames are used in conjunction with wide white mat board in order to focus the viewer's eyes on the center of the frame where the artwork rests. Metal frames also look attractive in a room with contemporary decor, but may be somewhat difficult to blend with more rustic decor styles. Wood picture frame moulding is used to make frames suitable for paintings and other types of artwork, and wood frames work well in more casual home settings. Because of the standard sizes and price difference, you will often see metal ready made picture frames used in art galleries and showrooms, because the standardized look also makes it more restful to the eye when used in a room full of artwork.
Some pieces of artwork are uniquely sized, and thus ready made picture frames will not work. In these instances, custom frames are available. You can choose every aspect of these frames prior to their construction, so the finished result should be exactly what you had in mind. You can select the type of wood picture frame moulding that you want, as well as any stain colors or finishes that you want applied to the wood picture frame moulding. You can have the frame sized to fit your specific artwork to set it off to perfection.
In addition to a ready made or wood frame, you will also need a few art framing supplies to finish your project. Glazing may or may not be included with the frame, so you will want to check on that. You will need some type of mount board to go underneath your artwork, and you will want a mat board to go on top of the picture. Picture corners and hinging tape are useful art framing supplies as well to get the mount and mat boards as well as the artwork in proper alignment.

Where can I buy a completely plain, unfinished, wood 4x6 picture frame?
Preferably one that comes with glass; I checked hobby lobby but didn't see any plain ones. Maybe I was just looking the wrong area?
Head to a thrift store and see if you can get a frame there. Otherwise make one with wood, brackets, and buy the glass.
